The president of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Gjorge Ivanov, welcomed on Friday the greater interest shown by European countries in his country’s name dispute with Greece.

“The direct involvement of powerful European countries in overcoming the problem, which relates to our country’s accession to the European Union, is welcome so we can overcome this status quo,” he told FYROM daily Dnevnik.

However, Ivanov accused Greece of “not contributing” to finding a mutually acceptable solution.

United Nations mediator Matthew Nimetz visited both countries this week but did not make any new proposal for settling the dispute.
